Upland Bird Hunting in Kansas

One of my all-time favorite seasons is autumn... the crisp air, the renewal of the soul, and the opening of pheasant and quail season in Kansas! I know I've talked about this before, but some of my fondest memories are walking stubble fields with my dad and uncle, carrying a shotgun bigger than I was! I doubt I was much of a hunter, or help, in the scheme of things, but it's those memories that will forever help maintain my passion for the outdoors.

Due to extreme weather patterns the last couple of years, the forecast for upland bird hunting is below average this year. You can read more about the forecast and more about Upland Bird Hunting in Kansas in my latest post for the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, & Tourism here: Numbers Vary, but Fun is Steady.

We don't have pheasants to hunt here in Utah anymore, but we raise them on the farm and cheat and kill and eat them for Christmas. Nowhere near as fun as hunting them, for sure!

Great pheasants

I've been wondering if pheasant will survive our recent milder winters. Like Julia, we'll be raising them. I've located eggs and have Silkie hens that will hatch and raise them for me. I'd much rather be able to hunt them than raise them.

Congrats on your pheasants...they look fantastic!

We too have limited upland birds here in Iowa due to some extreme winters, flooding, and now predators. I wish we could get the populations back that we had four or five years ago.
